Q&A with Joe Britto

1. What is your professional background?

My professional background is quite varied.

I started out in the music business as a recording engineer, then moved into producing and engineering albums. Music has a life span and, after ten years, I moved into managing a team of producers for a live current affairs radio station. A short stint in PR brought me to the land of coaching, where I began working with marginalized groups in Canada and the UK.

About 15 years ago, I began working in the corporate world, combining my management experience with my training as a psychological coach and facilitator. A few years after that, I began my current role of team coach and management consultant.

2. How would you describe your “teaching” style?

Well, first off, I’d say it’s not teaching. My approach when working with a group is to draw out the mindset and behaviors of teams – this is the team coaching part. I then help each individual apply that mindset as we tackle real-world business challenges – the management consulting part.

It works as a long-term approach because clients help develop their own systems and processes for improvement, rather than having a consultant impose one on them.

3. What is the most memorable program you have led? Why?

I did quite a bit of work for various child services in the UK. We had a lot of success in helping these programs go back to basics and center the work around the child and their families. It was powerful work for me, on a personal level. The impact of those improvements was felt by real children and their families during some of the toughest times of their lives.

4. What’s your proudest achievement?

I guess what I’m proudest of is seeing the effects of merging team coaching and management consulting together to get the best of both. It took several years to develop a way to bring that to businesses. During that time, pretty much everyone told me it was impossible. More than one person said that I was wasting my time, and that even if I did come up with a way to make it work, bringing a new approach to consulting would be an uphill battle I’d never win.

There’s a lot to be said for determination and resilience.

5. What is your number one hobby or interest outside of training and development?

I brew Kombucha – which, if you don’t know, is a fermented tea with a ton of health benefits. It’s not only great for you, it’s also easy and fun to make. When you buy it in a store it’s pretty fizzy, but that’s hard to do in a home brew. I like to try out different processes, and I’ve just developed a secondary fermenting process that looks like it might work. Fingers crossed.

What Our Customers Are Saying About Joe Britto

Here’s what customers like you have said about our coaching and consulting programs and partnering with Joe.

I am so very pleased with the wonderful work your team provided. What they produced was the perfect blend of interactive and thought-provoking. Joe’s ability to quickly digest the participants’ questions and comments and respond at exactly the right moment with exactly the right point was especially impressive. I could not have been happier with the outcome! The collaborative process of co-developing the course with Joe, and his ability to weave in new ideas that we discussed, even up to the day before the event, exceeded my expectations. I look forward to working with you again!— IntelThank you for a great four days. Our leadership team left feeling positive about how the sessions went. With your guidance, our team was able to see that we could work differently as an organization and, in the days after working with you, we hammered out some policies that are in line with the organizational flow chart we designed during our leaderships session. After these sessions, we’re a closer, more effective team that works well together. Your perspective was so valuable in getting us to this level of working.— AccessJoe is a great consultant. He made a group of hesitant people think outside of their comfort zone with ease. He took real-world examples and applied them to the training. If I have any regrets, it’s that our employees didn’t get more time with him.
